Which is the lightest solid material ?
Hello everyone!!!❤❤ I hope you are all fine.✌✌
Since, we have seen about the hardest material in our last blog, now we see the opposite of it, a lightest solid called the Aerogel.

WHAT IS AEROGEL ?
Aerogel is a synthetic porous ultralight material derived from a gel, in which the liquid component of the gel has been replaced with gas without significance collapse of the gel structure. The result is a solid with extremely low density and extremely low thermal conductivity.
The nick name Aerogel are
- Frozen Smoke
- Solid Smoke
- Solid Air
- Solid Cloud
- Blue Smoke

WHO INVENTED IT ?
Aerogel was first created by Samuel Stephens Kistler in 1931, as a result of a bet with Charles learned over who could replace the liquid in "jellies" with gas without causing any shrinkage.
Aerogels are produced by extracting the liquid component of a gel through super critical drying process. This allow the liquid to be slowly dried off without causing the solid matrix in the gel to collapse.
The first Aerogel were produced from silica gels. Later Kistler involved in making of Aerogel from Alumina, Chromia and Tin di oxide. Carbon Aerogels were first developed in the late 1980s.

PROPERTIES OF AEROGEL.
- Low thermal conductvity.

- Low sound speed.
- Low refractive index.
- Low dielectric constant.
- It is used as a insulator.
- NASA used Aerogel to trap space dust particles aboard the star dust spacecraft. The particle vaporize on impact with solids and pass through gases, but can be trapped in Aerogels, NASA also uses Aerogel for thermal insulation of the Mars Rover.
- CamelBak is an outdoor equipment company. It is famous for hydration packs and water bottles. This company uses Aerogel as insulation in thermal water bottles.
